Launch & Public Meeting – Why Repeal the 8th Amendment
11 April 2018 @ 19:30 - 21:30
Leitrim Together For Yes invites everyone to join us for our launch event, a Public Information Evening asking the question, “Why Repeal the 8th Amendment?”
The evening will feature guest speakers, who will share their professional experiences on how the 8th Amendment has impacted on the health, safety and wellbeing of women in Ireland. We will also hear from Arlette Lyons, (Termination For Medical Reasons), who will share her personal story of being forced to travel abroad to access abortion services.
The event will provide an opportunity for listening and discussion, as well as having questions addressed by experts and people directly effected by the criminalisation of abortion in Ireland.
Arlette Lyons of Termination For Medical Reasons says: “If the 8th amendment is not repealed women and couples will still have to endure the worst journey of their lives. It is heartbreaking and traumatic enough to receive the news your baby will die without having the extra pain of travelling outside your own country to receive the care you badly need.”
This will be the official launch of Leitrim Together For Yes, a volunteer-run group campaigning for the removal of the 8th Amendment from the Constitution in the upcoming referendum on 25th May. This is the local branch of Together For Yes, a national Civic Society campaign representing a broad coalition of interest groups.
As part of the national campaign, Leitrim Together For Yes is working for change in Ireland’s abortion laws, to provide compassion for women and men making difficult decisions and to ensure safe, regulated health-care in their own country.
Anyone who wants to understand the impact of the 8th Amendment, and what its repeal would mean for Ireland, is most welcome to join Leitrim Together For Yes and our guest speakers for an engaging and informative evening.
