Women & The 8th Amendment
8 April 2018 @ 08:00 - 17:00
Galway Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment are holding a public meeting with speakers:
Lawyers for Choice Representative Mairéad Enright will discuss the legal impact of the Eighth Amendment, the fight for reproductive justice and making sense of the legal situation throughout and beyond the referendum.
Grandparents for Repeal Representative will discuss how issues raised by the Amendment can affect our families directly. They call for a repeal of the Eighth Amendment so that their daughters and granddaughters to be able to face a crisis situation safely, here in Ireland, with all the support grandparents are so well placed to give them.
There will also be readings from the ‘In Her Shoes- Women of the Eighth’, facebook page.
According to their blog, the In Her Shoes page is “one way for undecided voters to meet the experience of 1 of the 12 women in Ireland that access termination services daily”. It has has “quickly evolved into being a platform for the voices of those that have been silenced in this country…What has evolved is a greater understanding of the lives that the 8th amendment impacts, and just how it does – from pregnant women being threatened with Gardai, brought to the high courts. With women having their waters broken, or their genitals cut in birth without consent – to women pregnant with a baby with fatal foetal abnormalities, those pregnant due to rape, failed birth control, living in poverty, trying to escape domestic violence, or simply not ready to be a parent.”
