Dr Peter Boylan
In a career spanning four decades – as a consultant obstetrician, gynaecologist, and Master of the National Maternity Hospital – Dr. Peter Boylan is unquestionably one of Ireland’s most well known and respected medical professionals.
Despite retiring in 2016, he has remained engaged within the medical community, principally in his role as Chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Dr. Boylan has been critical of the Eighth Amendment for many years and has continually spoken of, in his own words, the “inherently contradictory and hypocritical nature” of a constitution that allows a pregnant person to access abortion care abroad, but not at home.
Dr. Boylan’s first-hand professional experience of dealing with pregnancy – and the many complexities it can entail – led him to a pro-choice position and we are delighted that he is lending his considerable expertise to the conversation around removing the Eighth Amendment.
